The Uncouple

I take the train to and from work everyday, and everyday, I see the same married couple who sit on the same car as I do. I’ve been secretly observing them and how they interact with each other. Here are my findings.

This couple looks like complete opposites, and not in the “opposites attract” kind of way. The husband is on the husky side, dressing casually everyday. To me, he comes off as a social media douchebag. When he talks on his white iPhone, he’s loud and obnoxious. His wife on the other hand is always well dressed and wears trendy clothes and boots. She’s quiet and comes off as meek and somewhat of a prude. Together, they are awkward. They never touch, hold hands, kiss, and when they do speak, it’s briefly, and in short sentences.

Earlier this week, I saw the husband kick open the door to the train platform while holding a cup of coffee, not bothering to hold the door open for his wife. It shut in her face.

It’s hard for me to believe that a married couple can act like this. It reminds of me young relationships where you don’t know if you should hold the other person’s hand because they may feel like you’re moving too fast, or even if they like you “in that way.”

Maybe I feel this way because I’m head over heels in love with Travis, and make a point to tell him countless times a day how much I love him, hold his hand at every moment I can, and make sure that I look him in the eyes when I need to tell him something. And maybe I feel this way because Travis is a gentleman, polite, passionate and chivalrous, tells me countless times a day how much he loves me, holds my hand at every possible moment and looks me in the eyes when he needs to tell me something.

I guess if I had one wish, it would be that every couple – dating, married or otherwise – could be happy and over the moon in love. It’s a great feeling, so why not give it a try.
