Time Out

I won’t be posting anything funny or politically incorrect tonight.

The tests and ultrasound came back today and my cat, Danka, has cancer. I’ll be spending the evening with her.

Pre-New Year’s Resolution

Wednesday, I had a doctor’s appointment with the same specialist I saw six years ago about my stomach problems. My stomach has been acting wonky again with the addition of even more acid reflux that has been interfering with my asthma.

I spoke with the specialist and told him that pretty much anything I eat, I’m in pain. The doctor, who is also a surgeon, said that he wanted me to try going back on some medications I tried a few years ago, keep a food diary, get more of the same test done, and, oh yes, lose weight. He threw that in as a P.S. right before the appointment was over, and even though I knew I was coming, I still got really offended by it. It’s one thing for your family to tell you that you need to lose weight (thanks, mom) but coming from a complete stranger results in a different reaction. I could feel myself tearing up when he said that it wouldn’t hurt to lose 10-20 lbs. but I didn’t start crying. I wanted to storm out of the room and go home, but I decided that wouldn’t be a very mature thing to do.

I think the biggest wake up call was yesterday at my physical appointment. I knew I would have to step on the scale, and I knew that I had gained a lot of weight since the same time last year. Let’s just say that I need to lose more than 20 lbs.

My eating habits need to change, but what can I eat that won’t hurt my stomach or cause any other pain? How can I work out without my asthma and acid reflux getting in the way? Thankfully, Travis found some information for me so I can do just that and it involves using my puffer. How sexy is that!

So here is what I’m going to propose to myself, and you out there in Internet Land. My pre-New Year’s resolution is going to be that I get my butt in gear (literally and figuratively) before everyone starts to begin thinking about their resolutions. I’m planning on starting a month early, December 1, so I can not only see if losing weight is right for me (it is) but if it will benefit my health in the long run (it will.) I think that having a partner like Travis by my side no matter what my decisions are (surgery to correct the problem or staying on medication) is going to help motivate me and keep my goals in site.

Wish me luck, friends!

The Uncouple

I take the train to and from work everyday, and everyday, I see the same married couple who sit on the same car as I do. I’ve been secretly observing them and how they interact with each other. Here are my findings.

This couple looks like complete opposites, and not in the “opposites attract” kind of way. The husband is on the husky side, dressing casually everyday. To me, he comes off as a social media douchebag. When he talks on his white iPhone, he’s loud and obnoxious. His wife on the other hand is always well dressed and wears trendy clothes and boots. She’s quiet and comes off as meek and somewhat of a prude. Together, they are awkward. They never touch, hold hands, kiss, and when they do speak, it’s briefly, and in short sentences.

Earlier this week, I saw the husband kick open the door to the train platform while holding a cup of coffee, not bothering to hold the door open for his wife. It shut in her face.

It’s hard for me to believe that a married couple can act like this. It reminds of me young relationships where you don’t know if you should hold the other person’s hand because they may feel like you’re moving too fast, or even if they like you “in that way.”

Maybe I feel this way because I’m head over heels in love with Travis, and make a point to tell him countless times a day how much I love him, hold his hand at every moment I can, and make sure that I look him in the eyes when I need to tell him something. And maybe I feel this way because Travis is a gentleman, polite, passionate and chivalrous, tells me countless times a day how much he loves me, holds my hand at every possible moment and looks me in the eyes when he needs to tell me something.

I guess if I had one wish, it would be that every couple – dating, married or otherwise – could be happy and over the moon in love. It’s a great feeling, so why not give it a try.

Movember!

It’s that time again! Movember is upon us, and everyone is getting into the swing of things.

If you don’t know about Movember, (formally November) it occurs for one month to raise awareness for men’s health, especially prostate cancer. Men grow fabulous looking moustaches (to the best of their ability) and at the end of the month, there’s a party to celebrate, and show off the Mos.

If you want more information or to donate, click here to find your location.

After you donate, check out these pictures of Travis, my cat Danka, and me getting in the Movember spirit!

My Little Birthday Pony

Saturday was Travis‘ 25th birthday and I surprised him with a trip horseback riding (along with a Flip Mino HD, but I’ll let him tell you about that.) We both had never been on a horse before other than the pony rides at the CNE where you just walk around in a circle, so this was going to be an adventure.

When we arrived to our destination, Horse Play Niagara, we were greeted with country life and country smells. There were horses everywhere; big ones, small ones, fat ones, tall ones. We signed in, read the rules of the company, signed out lives way, and waited to mount our steeds.

I went first, and I have to say, my little legs didn’t fail me. Up I went onto the biggest horse available for our groups’ tour, Zorro (who turned out to be incredible gassy, which reminded me of this.) Travis was next on Teddy, the second biggest horse. The rest of our group consisted of three little girls no older than eight, their parental chaperon, and our guide, Ashley.

Once everyone was on their horse, away we went into the sunset – so to speak. We started off slow, and Ashley repeated how to stop and guide the horses. After about 15 minutes, Ashley says, “OK, why don’t we try a little bit of trotting.” Trotting, this was going to be fun! Everyone I have ever seen in movies and on TV trotting on a horse looked like they were having a great time, so this would be no different, right? Wrong. I tapped my heels on Zorro and he, and his but ol’ butt took off and my butt and thighs were taking the brunt of his trotting. Needless to say that it took a while to get used to trotting, we did it about four or five times, and each time, my thighs and butt would experience new pain (it quickly went away until the next trot.)

The one hour guided tour took us on the Trans Canada Trail, beside a quarry and on little paths. The weather also couldn’t have been better. It was a perfect day, and I know that Travis really enjoyed himself (he’ll tell you so, don’t worry.) I would definitely go horseback riding again, just not in the near future – my legs and butt are still aching from my happily trotting horse.

HealthTronix

Now this is a Hollywood idea I can get behind!

Earlier this year, Jason Segel mentioned on The Dean Blundell Show (102.1 The Edge) that he believed and followed something a life system called HealthTronix. It’s made up of three key features:

  • Be kind
  • Exercise
  • Pursue a passion with vigor

I don’t know if he’s being serious or just joking around, but I’m going to practice this in the new year and from now on. It’s not that I don’t already, but doing all three more actively and attentively will (I think) make me a better person and help me keep focused.

Brand New

This is my new site, thanks for stopping by!

I decided to create something a little more mature and focused, but still keep the playfulness I’m known for.

Feel free to poke around the site, click on some links, and you know, subscribe to my RSS feed. There will be a lot more awesomeness to come, I promise.
